Recorded/mixed by Dan Frechette in December 2016 at The Shed, Bonny Doon, CA.

Dan Frechette: Vocals, 12 string "Jasmine" acoustic and electric guitar, harmonica, autoharp, square neck dobro, banjo, mandolin, electric bass, percussion instruments.

Dan Frechette: "Jasmine Dreams" is a title I came up with regarding my 12 string "Jasmine" guitar, made by Takamine. It was my first main acoustic guitar, bought when I was 14 by my dad and I (I paid for half the guitar using money from my lawn mowing job!). The guitar is a great source of inspiration for my songwriting, with it's amazing powerful room filling overtones and sustain and perfect volume to sing to. For many years I had lost touch with the guitar and it was not staying in tune, so it sat in a closet as a keepsake for about 15 years. This past summer I finally took it to the luthier Daryl Perry in Winnipeg, who had originally converted it to left handed. He restored my guitar to its former glory and I've been playing it almost every day since. I noticed I was gravitating towards playing the songs I wrote on it as a teenager in Pinawa, Manitoba. Once I set up my studio in California I decided to finally record a lot of these songs using the Jasmine, and recording them to the best of my ability. This album is lovingly dedicated to my mother Agnes Frechette, who has been telling me for years to record these songs, saying many of them are her favourites, as they were the soundtrack to our life back in the early 1990's.

Enjoy the songs and thanks for listening!

Intro G

While I'm (D) gazing out far be(Em)hind me (C.)at my (G)footprints
and (D)memories plague me like a (Em)vagabond (C.)finding his (G) fame
and (D)whenever I ask if I could (Em) possibly go (C.) on, I (G) wonder
whatever (Em) hides the light from your (Am) eyes that shine (C.) forever (G) blue?

While I'm (D) looking out far (Em) behind me (C.) at the (G) widow
who just (D) happened to see those (Em) gangsters (C.) commit this (G) crime
and (D) whenever I gaze (Em) into your (C.) eyes, I (G) wonder
whatever (Em) hides the light from your (Am) eyes that shine (C.) forever (G) blue?

D-Em-C-G x3
Em-Am-C-G

While I'm (D) looking out far (Em) behind me (C.) at the (G) sadness
and the (D) confusion that surrounds you like (Em) water a(C.)round a (G) flame
and (D) as I look in(Em)to these (C.) clouds I (G) wonder
while the (Em) tears hide the light from your (Am) eyes that shine (C.) forever (G) blue.

lyrics

Full Moon's Dawn - Dan Frechette © 1992

G-C-G-Em-G-Em-C-G-D

There (G) ain't no intimacy (C.) left here
(G) in your city of (Em) tears
you (G) may have lost the (Em) dirtiest war
but (C.)imagine (G) if you'd have (D) won
you're (G) alone among your (C.) guests
to your (G) ballroom in the (C.) black
and your (G) billion whispering (Em) dreams
have all (C.) vanished (G) like a (D) fad

(Chorus) There's (Em) something mighty (G) in your soul
(C.) dying like an (G)ec(D)ho
but (Em) love feels kind of (G) strange on a (C.) full (G) moon's (D) dawn
It (Em) all depends on (G) how you try
to (C.) paint all the (G) truth with (D) lies
(Em) living in some (G) disguise
and so (C.) afraid of (G) being (D) lost.

G-C-G-Em-G-Em-C-G-D

The (G) days go on (C.) forever
but the (G) nights go on so (Em) fast
you're (G) shedding all your (Em) tears
and (C.) swallow(G)ing your (D) pride
there's a (G) distance set (C.) between
the (G) dancers and the (Em) clowns
but (G) I can I tell where (Em) you are
when you're (C.) never (G) to be (D) found?

(Chorus)

G-Am-C-Gx2

(G) I'm so much (Am) stronger than I (C.) was awhile (G) ago
(G) I wouldn't last much (Am) longer if (C.) I was overt(G)hrown
(G) Let's approach the (Em) situation with (C.) sense inside our (G) minds
and if you pride our (Am) infatuation (C.) please drop me a (G) line

(Chorus)
If you (Am) need me I'm (C.) running pretty fast
I'll be (G) going past you (D) soon
and if you (Em) love me I can (D) slip through your fingers
so (C.) wait for me at high (G) noon

(G) I've been standing (Am) here so long I could (C.) fall right through my (G) tracks
(G) You think I'm (Am) lonely 'cause you're (C.) never coming (G) back
(G) I've been staying (Em) near the phone (C.) waiting for a ring or (G) two
(G) I could say in a (Am) one guess all the (C.) love that's left in (G) you

(Chorus)

(G) I know I've (Am) been betrayed but (C.) call me when you (G) can
(G) I bet my (Am) pennies you mis(C.) took me for another (G) man
(G) I've got to (Em) tell you I've (C.) got some wounds to (G) mend
(G) But I'm quite (Am) certain you'll just (C.) cut me up (G) again.

Forever Crooked Road - Dan Frechette © 1991

C-G-C-D-Em-Em

(C.) Wake up in the night
(G) Clouds in your (Em) eyes
(C.) and every sullen man seems old and (G) wasted (Em)
(C.) now and then we all get that (G) urge to (Em) try
but you (C.) mustn't take the chance and then you (D) waste it (Em)

(C.) So there you are
(G) sitting in the (Em) dark
and you're (C.) looking at a wall whose paint has (G) faded (Em)
(C.) so you feel tears welling up in you but you're (G) too old to (Em) cry
and you're (C.) looking for some reason to get (D) excited

(Chorus)
And the (Em) sun will ap(C.)pear
when you're (G) searching for some warmth
while you're (Em) living in a (D) fear that you'll (Em) break before the (C.) dawn. --
C-D-C-G x4

(C.) Look up at the sky
(G) at the pouring (Em) rain
and there's (C.) nothing left to do except try to (G) face it (Em)
(C.) once you've realized your (G) longing (Em) pain
to get (C.) every wish fulfilled that you've (D) awaited
(Em)

(C.) So walk on slow
down the (G) forever crooked (Em) road
(C.) it's just to show where you've been (G) headed (Em)
(C.) Don't shy away once you've (G) reached your (Em) goals
because (C.) people may kiss the ground on which
you've (D) treaded

(Chorus)

lyrics

Sitting Nicely In The Sun - Dan Frechette © 1990

G-Em-C-G

(G) See the (Em) sun shining on a (C.) cloudy (G) day
(G) Feel the (Em) wind whisper in your (C.) ear (G)
(G) See some (Em) clouds racing (C.) in the (G) sky
(C.) man, this is gonna be a great (G) year

(G) Hear the (Em) people whisper your (C.) name (G)
(G) speaking (Em) softy about your (C.) fame (G);
(G) ask the (Em) stars up (C.) above (G)
(C.) why is this world so full of (G) love?

(C.) Tell me no reasons
I (Em) only want to know
I'm (D) not against it
I'm (C.) only telling you (G) so

(C.) The earth to me is a place of (G) love
(C.) the peace around a lonely (G) star
(C.) That's what I'm thinking (G) of
A (C.) glimpse of pictures from afar (G)

(G) Birds are (Em) circling in the (C.) air (G)
(G) fish are (Em) swimming in the (C.) sea (G)
(G) sitting (Em) alone at the (C.) top of the (G) stairs
(C.) what does all this have to mean? (G)

(C.) Everybody outside is having (G) fun
(C.) I have these questions still (G) undone
(C.) I've just found out I'm not the only (G) one
(C.) Sitting nicely in the (G) sun.
(C.) Sitting nicely in the (G) sun.(C.)
(C.) Sitting nicely in the (G) sun.

Crashing On Through 02:16
lyrics

Crashing On Through - Dan Frechette © 1991

(Am) Looking outside at the (Em) rain
(G) putting on it's (D) show
(Am) everybody's talking (Em) about
(G) the barmaids (D) clothes
(Am) The man who's in charge of the (Em) bar
is (C.) waiting for the man at (G) large
to come (Am) crashing on (Em) through
and look (G) yonder (C.) out the (D) win(C.)dow (Am)

(Am) He's searching the ground for a (Em) trail
and which (G) way he's gonna (D) go
when he (Am) hears the wind start to (G) shout
he's gonna (Em) be on his way (Am) home
(Am) There is a moon in (Em) sight tonight
and a (C.) gunshot in the (G) dim light
will send him (Am) crashing on (Em) through
and lay (G) dead out(C.)side the (D) win(C.)dow (Am)

(Am) He's escaping across the (Em) terrain
the (G) wind is starting to (D) blow
(Am) everybody's thinking (G) about
(Em) something un(Am) known
(Am) someone's peering into the (Em) dark
into his (C.) mind and his eyes and his (G) heart
saying, (Am) "stay where you (Em) are or I'll (G) make your (C.) wife a (D) wid(C.)ow" (Am)

He (Am) didn't want to take the (Em) pain
of (C.) living in a (D) shadow
he (Am) had too many doubts (G) about
(Em) four walls of (Am) stone
he (Am) thought what he did was (Em) right
but a (C.) loud shot deep in the (G) night
sent him (Am) crashing on (Em) through and lay
(G) dying (C.) near the (D) wind(C.)ow (Am)

Here Comes The Storm 03:20
lyrics

Here Comes The Storm - Dan Frechette © 1991

(Am) I'm lost in the (C.) dark
(G) and the moon is too dim
(Am) seems like just (C.) another night to be (G) waiting for the (D) dawn
(Am) I'm alone in a (C.) death ridden world
(G) it's sheer con(Am)fusion
I (Em) long to stay and (C.) wait here for the (G) dawn

(Chorus)
But it (Em) can not (C.) wait for (G) me
I'm (D) overcome (Em) by the (C.) glare
when I (Em) gaze to(C.)wards the (G) horizon
it's (D) rising
but it (Em) can not (C.) wait for (G) me
and I (D) cry out (Em) in (C.) despair
and I (Em) gaze to(C.)wards the (G) horizon
it's (D) hiding
behind them (Em) clouds
here comes the (G) storm.

(Am) I've fallen (C.) asleep
(G) and all the darkness remains around me
(Am) silence cuts so (C.) deep
but it (G) never hurts to (D) try
to (Am) dull the (C.) blades
to just (G) stay a while and (D) wait
to over(Em)come my fate
and (C.) wait here for the (G) dawn

(Chorus)

My (Em) secrets are safe
because I (G) keep them all in mind
I (Em) don't just let them out
and tell them (G) to this world (D)
simply (A) because it's just (C.) me and the ground that's so (G) cold
it's just my (C.) patience standing there all (G) alone
it's just my (C.) life being discarded in a (D) hole - C-G-C-G

(Chorus)

Widowed Jane 04:00
lyrics

Widowed Jane - Dan Frechette © 1991

(D) Widowed (Em) Jane
it's just (C.) another man passing (Em) by
he (C.) emerged from deep in the (G) night
he'll (C.) only take your (D) soul (C.) away

(D) Widowed (Em) Jane
(C.) his life was lived a (Em) lie
his (C.) presence made you (G) hide
he (C.) lied and tried to (D) render (C.) rage

(D) Widowed (Em) Jane
of all the (C.) hands here in this (Em) land
did you (C.) have to take his (G) hand?
your (C.) road of life was (D) already (Em) paved

(Chorus)
If (C.) this is how you feel
then where will you be to(G)morrow
you will still be (Em) alone
(C.) you'll be living in a (G) hole
If (C.) this is how you feel
then where will you be (G) tomorrow (Em)
you will still be (C.) alone
(D) you'll be living in a (Em) hole

(D) Widowed (Em) Jane
I know no (C.) man could stand a (Em) chance
when (C.) placed beside your (G) man
but he's (C.) gone now is it (D) worth the (C.) wait?

(D) Widowed (Em) Jane
your (C.) patience will pay a (Em) price
for there is (C.) no one on your (G) side
until these (C.) memories start to (D) fade (Em) away

(Chorus)

(D) Widowed (Em) Jane
your (C.) conscience slowed it's (Em) stride
it's (C.) falling farther (G) behind
I (C.) thought it was your (G) guide
now you (C.) wander aimless (D) through the (C.) haze

(D) Widowed (Em) Jane
now it's (C.) there for you to (Em) decide
it's been a (C.) long time since you (G) cried
so (C.) turn around the (D) other (Em) way.

C-G-Am
C-G-Em-D

(C.) Don't go (G) running back 'cause (Am) he won't be there
(C.) He'd never (G) guess you're coming (D) home
but (C.) don't give (G) up just 'cause (Em) he's hard to (D) find now
for (C.) he has left a (G) trail of (Em) stepping (D) stones

(C.) Don't try to (G) find him by (Am) watching the horizons
(C.) You'll see him (G) silhouetted by the (Em) ice glazed setting (D) sun
Just (C.) follow what your (G) conscience tells you
(Em) walk upon his (C.) trail of stepping (G) stones
-oh (D) no

(Chorus)
Oh, (Em) stepping stones and (C.) roses on the (G) ground (B7)
(Em) lead her to her (C.) mountain
(G) lead her to her (D) home
Oh, (Em) stepping stones and (C.) roses on the (G) ground (B7)
(Em) lead her to her (C.) mountain
(D) lead her to her (Em) home

Love Was Too Strong 02:42
lyrics

Love Was Too Strong - Dan Frechette © 1991

(G) He knew he'd (Am) be somebody
but he (C.) wondered if he'd get the (G) chance
(G) when he was (Am) growing up
he (C.) had his fair share of (G) plans
(G) then his (Am) time was up
he was (C.) working toward his (G) dreams
(G) hey life is (Am) difficult but you can (C.) be who want to (G) be

(chorus)
(Am) He spoke no (C.) lies
he spoke no (D) truth
(C.) a soul on a (G) road where nobody (D) stayed
(C.) he just packed his (D) bag
the world he (G) knew
became his (Em) home
'cause his (C.) love (Em) was (Am) too (G) strong
his (C.) love (Em) was (Am) too (G) strong
he had to (C.) learn how to play the game (G)

(G) He lived for (Am) pleasure
but the (C.) excitement was all (G) gone
(G) he went out (Am) like a light when he (C.) found out what went (G) wrong
(G) he lost his (Am) patience
(C.) again and again and (G) again
(G) nobody knew the (Am) drifter
he was (C.) nobody's (G) friend

(chorus)

'cause his (C.) love (Em) was (Am) too (G) strong
his (C.) love (Em) was (Am) too (G) strong
he had to (C.) learn how to face the (G) pain
his (C.) love (Em) was (Am) too (G) strong
his (C.) love (Em) was (Am) too (G) strong
he had to (C.) learn how to play the (G) game
he had to (C.) learn how to play the (G) game
had to (C.) learn to play the (G) game

lyrics

Hoodoo County - Dan Frechette © 1991

G intro

I was (Em) searching for a woman in the (C.) summer of (G) love
(Em) too bad the ladies were (C.) hard to (G) find
it was (Em) during that summer was (C.) approaching (G) me
that we (C.) spoke for a while and she gazed into my (G) mind

It's like (G) swimming in a (Am) river being (C.) pushed down(G) stream
(G) strange looking (Am) visions painted (C.) in your (G) mind
now (Em) easy living ain't what it (C.) seems to (G) be (D)
when you're (C.) hanging around with the other kind (G)

(chorus)
It's been a (C.) long (Em) day in (Am) hoodoo (G) county
it's been a (C.) short (Em) night in (Am) voodoo (G) calm
well, (C.) how can I (Em) persuade for (Am) you to (G) join me, (D) yeah,
(C.) under the moonlit (G) calm

Well a (G) miracle's gonna (C.) catch up to (G) me
If it (G) comes any (Am) closer just (C.) chase it (G) away
while I'm (Em) waiting for a change in the (C.) scenery (G) (D)
I'm gonna (C.) save my mind for another (G) day

(chorus)
G-C-G-G-D-D-C-D-G-Em-G-A-C-G

You can (G) pick up your (Am) remains and (C.) leave me (G) be
because (G) I find it (Am) hard to stare (C.) in your (G) eyes
or we can (Em) wait a bit but (C.) still feel free (G) (D)
now I know (C.) how it feels when the sparrow (G) cries
now I (C.) know how it feels when the sparrow (Em) flies
and I (C.) know how it feels when the sparrow (G) dies

lyrics

Flanagan Isle - Dan Frechette © 1991

Intro: Em to G

(G) Misty (Am) meadow
(Em) meets the (D) everglades
(G) forget the (Em) clouds
(C.) forget the (D) night
(G) once the ocean (Am) fog (Em) surrounds the (D) piers
the (G) sun shall (D) come and the (Em) darkness will (C.) fade (G) away

(G) Just another cool (Am) morning
(Em) when the sun don't (D) shine
(G) I want to run in the (Em) dew lit grass
(C.) I want to leave my (D) fear behind
(G) I'm really troubled and I'm (Em) running out of (C.) time
so keep an (G) eye where you're (D) heading 'cause there (Em) is no (C.) place to (G) hide

(chorus)
(Em) Don't (D) run away
(Em) don't (D) run away
I'm (C.) standing in a shadow
standing in your (G) shoes
(Em) don't (D) stay away
(Em) don't (D) fall astray
I'm (C.) standing in a shadow
standing in your (G) shoes

G- G/F#bass/Em/D/C/G

(G) Your painless (Am) shadow
(Em) begins to (D) fall astray
(G) so remind the (Em) clouds (C.) to shield the (D) light
(G) that falls before me
(Em) and down the (C.) valley
where the (G) floods take (D) place near the (Em) waters of
(C.) Flanagan (G) Isle

(chorus)
(Em) Don't (D) run away
(Em) don't (D) run away
I'm (C.) standing in a shadow
what have I got to (G) lose?
(Em) don't (D) stay away
(Em) don't fall (D) astray
I'm (C.) standing in a shadow
and the sun don't rise 'til (G) noon.

lyrics

Memphis - Dan Frechette © 1991

G-Am-C-G

Well I (G) see you've got your troubles
(Am) and they're bugging (C.) you pretty (G) bad
Yes I (G) know you've got your problems
'cause you (Am) know it's just (C.) another passing (G) fad (Em)
and when it (D) comes time to be running with your pack of (Em) fools (C.)
I'll be (G) taking off to (D) Memphis (Em)
(C.) wouldn't (G) you?

When your (G) feet are dragging through the mud
you must (Am) learn (C.) exactly how to (G) act
you can't (G) love this man and rob him and (Am) expect him not to (G) react (Em)
and (D) when it comes time to be arguing with your pack of (Em) fools (C.)
I'll be (G) taking off to (D) Memphis
but I (Em) don't know (C.) exactly what you'll (G) do

G-Am-C-G x2
D-Em-C
G-D-Em-C-G

Now when I'm (G) gone to Memphis
(Am) don't talk (C.) about me behind my (G) back
because (G) I've got your name and number
and my (Am) army is (C.) eager to (G) attack (Em)
(D) when it comes time to break down and tell me the (Em) truth (C.)
I'll be (G) coming back from (D) Memphis
to (Em) say I never (C.) loved you (G) too
