She Don't Stop Running If I'm looking for her Then I'm where I belong. Can't stay home and think straight when she's been gone so long. (Chorus) I'm not trying to keep her I don't miss her at all. It's more how it feels on the outside how she don't stop running when I call. She don't need beautiful clothes because she turns heads all the same. When I take her back home she's gonna dress like a man again. (Chorus) I'm gonna let her run now. That's when she always returns. If she comes back looking funny you know it's gonna be my turn. (Chorus)
2.
Give Me The Freedom Of Choice I'm blown decayed inside let my heart feel the ride I just died can I hide? I'm grown but my bones feel small within us all I know we're tall (Chorus) Give me the freedom of choice I can use my own voice Got a head and a shoulder to lean it on And if the maid asks me I'll say I'm trying for peace she can clean up the blood on the floor I'm hell my brother as well he's got something of an appetite for raising it and I know that if he doesn't show I'll have to entertain on my own (Chorus) I'm dead I know that you said It's better to bend with ones who don't tend to shoot their mouth all over the house their words can kill I'm so small (Chorus) (Chorus)

The Comfort In Lies I see madness and rage and the fear in the face of my reflection and I wonder sometimes why I bother to stand in its way. I mean, looking at all of the things that I've left unaccomplished If I weren't a child I could have anything my own way But it's true when you're true to yourself you've got to be happy. I prefer the comfort in lies any old day. (chorus) oooh, everything's all right I'm here for a reason ooooh, no need to get uptight, everything's all right ooooh, everything's all right I'm here for a reason Just wasting my time - thinking of the fate of the nation. What can I do when nobody knows what to expect? Just a child of the wild, I can be king of the world now making my way to the gold mine, yeah. I may just be a good boy Gotta be happy. I prefer the comfort in lies any old day. (chorus)

Anytime You'll Find Me Nobody wants you as much as I do Nobody can treat you every day as someone new when you're so happy remember I'm the man anytime you'll find me Let me hold you later someday when you have the time You'll never regret it I'm just another next in line Give me the freedom I'll do what you do Anytime you'll find me Anytime you'll find me love will never blind me Anytime you'll find me that'll be the day When you search for somebody you can hear me speak your name when you're down on the corner I'm always on the road you're playing Clearly it's hidden you don't know what I'd do anytime you'll find me with you anytime you'll find me with you.

So Deeply Inside You No one told me when I was alone I'd meet someone who I loved and turned around but it's happened before and I'm facing the floor hoping that this gets off the ground Last time I met somebody so fine it fell apart like a tall ocean wave and it came in so fast and it never went back and I never felt so high again (Chorus) Do You feel like I do - do you feel me so deeply inside of you Do You feel like I do - do you feel me so deeply inside Now I'm waiting for the lonely days to come and take you away again will I ever feel the same doesn't anybody care anymore? (Chorus) No one told me when I was alone I'd meet someone who I loved and turned around but it's happened before and I'm facing the floor hoping that this gets off the ground (Chorus)
7.
Once Upon A Time I have waited in the darkness to see your sunlight shine remembing the tender touch you often left behind but no matter where you're going who you are or who you'll be you'll know in your tomorrows yesterday there was me oh you'll see it in your mirror in your eyes and in your smile our lives touched together once upon a time. When it's time for going and for following your dreams you can look back to yesterday's smiling memories and whenever the dark corridor seems hazy, hard, and long you can listen through the evening and hear me sing your song you can look back from tomorrow and see me wave goodbye our lives touiched together once upon a time.

The Wind 02:53
The Wind I'm trapped inside myself and I'm not broken. I'm talking to myself and I feel open. I am like the wind sometimes I feel I'm ready to blow. I should know to where I'm blowing but I don't know. I hear birds flying by singing a storm is near but I'm feeling quite insane I'm going to stay right here. Wait until the storm comes absorbs me in its cold. I should know to where the sun shines but I don't know. I'm trapped inside myself and I'm not broken. I'm talking to myself and I feel open. I am like the wind sometimes I feel I'm ready to blow. I should know to where I'm blowing but I don't know.

Nikki 02:59
Nikki You left your footprints in the sand you left your childhood on the road you never needed no one's hand you could find your way alone every word was like a puzzle you could take apart and see I could imagine all your life past and present and future dreams. You ran with all the nightmare gangs felt the chills to your bones you robbed yourself of virginity innocence was never shown you spoke in circles and echoes your vision crying to be seen I could imagine all your life past and present and future dreams. You could try your hand at kinship try to love life like it was try to understand life's hardships what was underneath its cuts but Nikki spoke with a wistful vengeance and Nikki'd grumble when she'd breathe I could imagine all her life past and present and future dreams. I could imagine all her life past and present and future dreams.

The Ballad Of Jerome Cornelius In 1628 two ships left Holland and were caught in a storm bound for the East Indies islands and the two ships swung off course The merchant ship Batavia with 300 people onboard struck a coral reef in the Wallaby near the west Australian shore These islands were short on water Captain Paelsaert went for aid Planned a month long journey in a dinghy up north for the sake of the castaways and tired and torn they reached the shore of the East Indies islands the governor sent them back on a rescue yacht he lent them the yacht Sardam The Batavia's survivors carried jewels and gold and 12 chests of money onto land and a greedy young thug named Cornelius quickly took command He planned to seize the rescue ship he and many a man and escape with the money and the gold and the jewels and kill who betrayed his plan he ordered a brutal massacre 150 men and women died Cornelius and his men watched the sea everyday for the Sardam was due anytime Cornelius knew of an island 3 or 4 miles away with a team of survivors led by a man whose name was Webeye Hayes Hayes was warned by refugees of Cornelius's plan Hayes alerted the captain when the ship hit the shore that Cornelius would seize the Sardam Pealsart seized Cornelius he was tried and put in a cell they cut off both his hands and hung him on a stand and to his men the same fate was dealt.

Long Sleeved Shirt I was getting bored with the world one day So I said "I'm gonna go on a shopping spree" I went to the dress-up shop picked me up a brand new top it was a long sleeved shirt just an ugly old thing anyone would wear It was black and red and green and orange too bad nothing rhymes with orange I slipped the shirt on and walked out on the street but the shirt hung right down under my feet I looked like a multi-color bowling pin I fell down I went back in the dress up store asked the clerk for a shirt that don't hang to the floor he pointed to the tag on the collar of the neck and said "pure cotton - what the heck! just wash it a couple times! you'll see it'll shrink!" So I tripped on down to the laundromat threw in a few loonies and left it at that after some time I took a peek to see shirt looked pretty damn good to me so I tried it on and it hung to my navel belly button I wore it all the time and no one seemed to care as much for my shirt as for my belly button hair pretty soon things weren't looking so bad I'd started up my own little belly button fad no one wears long shirts anymore not unless you're the old fashioned kind hide the belly button.

about

In 1998, Ron Sexsmith's manager, Michael Dixon, arranged for me through EMI Publishing to record a demo for Columbia Records with Shel Talmy producing in Hollywood. The months leading up to the session were a handful of phone calls of me discussing what songs Shel Talmy chose for me to record. I had sent him a cassette tape with me singing 30 of my "best songs", and he had chosen the players and the songs to record, focusing on a cross section of styles to showcase me as a songwriter. I flew there from Winnipeg with just my Nylon string La Patrie classical guitar. Shel said the session would not be a success with only this guitar so they took me guitar shopping and bought me a Larrivee D-10 left handed guitar (worth around $2300 at the time, my first quality guitar, that I used for another few years.) They also were kind enough to rent me a 12 string Martin D-12-28 for the session, but it was right handed! I learned how to play the guitar chords and riffs for the songs upside down over the course of 2 intense days in my hotel room (The Farmers Daughter, across from CBS Studios where The Price Is Right was filmed). The songs I played upside down 12 string on here are "Freedom Of Choice", "Nikki", and "The Ballad Of Jerome Cornelius". I was also sick with very serious food poisoning. It was amazing to be in California my first time, I was 21 years old. July 4th weekend we spent two days in the studio with pro musicians, who included Tommy Eyre (keyboards) who had recorded and toured with Joe Cocker, Hall and Oates, BB King, and his wife Scarlet Rivera (Fiddler on Bob Dylan's Desire album and Rolling Thunder Revue). These folks were amazing to work with and it was a whirlwind session. I flew home and finally listened to the tape with my family and was disappointed in the results. My voice was wracked from vomiting for two days and I wanted to re-record the whole thing. Finally I was invited to Nashville in November 1998 to have the demos remixed as an acoustic 5 song demo with new vocals with Joe Baldridge. To no avail, however, as Columbia passed on the demos and signed Fiona Apple instead.

I was in touch with Shel Talmy online a few times over the years to ask to see if there was a digital copy of this recording, and like "Living In A Dream" it only exists on cassette. This recording is in stereo but the cable to transfer the recording only works as mono. In future I hope to be able to update this in it's stereo analog tape hiss glory. Enjoy!
