When I Was A Boy When I was a boy I had many heroes Never met them all but I knew them by heart Well I read their books I even looked like them and my folks they say one day I'm going to live like them First there was Simon Then came Dylan I read Sandburg I sang Cohen And I knew them But they never knew me I was just another fan With just another dream. I'll make you proud, ma I'll make you proud, pa Just give me a little time and I'll meet those heroes and I'll Be on the big screen A poet who's books you'll read a singer whose songs you'll sing Man, I'll be everything. Now I'm 29 And I've put those days behind Those were just big dreams Insecurites But I still read their books And I still look like them and my folks they say one day I'm gonna live like them.

New Years Day 1980 She lived beneath a shadow in those years untouched by dreams Her tattooes told grim tales of a girl who once braved the scene She can't be my friend no more, this was the farthest she could fall But she lived her life like she was going to die before she'd even lived at all She grew up in boredom town with a stepfather he never knew He was always out doing his drug jobs, breaking in his old pair of shoes when she turned 16 in 1978 she'd heard the bandwagon call and she lived her life like she was going to die before she'd even lived at all She ran into vanity stuck-ups who let her run the show soon she was singing for cocktails and dancing for middle aged crows Her evenings were branded with fast lane ways, she came each time she was called And she lived her life like she was going to die before she even lived at all. She'd told me once she was frightened of perverts armed with knives cemetaries filled with old friends and nightclubs filled with life And fear brings down some people like a roof without any walls So she lived her life like she was going to die before she'd even lived at all On New Years Day 1980, there's a letter near her bed saying "I been watching myself dying every night without a prayer for me being said" And her last words on her paper in her half-hearted pencil scrawl "I've lived my life like I was going to die and I haven't even lived at all".

The Hobo Song Sundown on the park strolling through the city dark I saw a local hobo on the bench his beard his only souvenir of neglect to find his pocket mirror his clothes were ripped and torn and full of stench But something in his eyes told me something went strange something told me he was going home (chorus) - now he's always flying high on that big old ship in the sky flying to the heaven he don't know I wonder if you passed him by and heard him say he was going to die if he didn't get a dollar for the show. he played a beat up lap guitar and he never made it very far people laughed while he played for his meals today I see his guitar gone - something he would never pawn I wonder if that thief got a good deal something in his eyes told me something had gone strange something told me not to pass him by (chorus) Today I see him lying there in the park that never cared who could care when they're too scared to know? I called the ambulance it's true it wasn't really hard to do I went somewhere nobody would dare to go Because something in his eyes told me something had gone strange something told me not to pass him by (chorus)
4.
Life Without Home They say come on home where the weather is fine Where the good old stories still are alive and the old man always has a new tale to tell without it I'd be living in hell (Chorus) Life without home would be a mighty dead road I pulled out my harp and I couldn't even blow I know you sing like you dance in the sun But you've got your roots and I've gotta run. Mama and Papa don't see that I'm grown I've made a million memories digging your gold I ain't saying we don't talk about the past But I'd like to tell you something new when I get back (chorus) I'm tired of rolling the same old cigarettes making bets on that race track long out west I'm going home more often now I guess my folks must be thinking I'm a worn out mess (chorus)
5.
Take Me Home, I Am Your Road You can show me what you've got You cave in and away I stand in you like a lover but undercover I show you the way (Chorus) Because I'm a dream you'll seldom conjure I'm your object of no desire There's no time left to be alone Take me home, I am your road Lift me up and bring me down hold my faith and turn me around make me sing like no one could make me sing like no one should (Chorus)
6.
The Crack In Your Voice You say your life is better than it ever was before and there isn't a lover who could ever give you anything more Strange is the sound of the crack in your voice I'm almost ashamed of myself and the tricks you can pull Strange is the sound of the crack in your voice I'm running out your door The strangers in your life romance you and disappear Like stale rooms blurred by gin you don't comfort me Strange is the feeling of the crack in your voice I long to take your longing for granted - like I am taken by you Strange is the feeling of the crack in your voice I'm running out your door.
7.
Mr. Man 04:22
Mr. Man (chorus) There is no measure for time in heaven There are no thundering skies in heaven and all the laws are lies here in heaven only the distant light does shine in heaven It takes a lot to give what you don't want to keep hey hey hey Mr. Man? and it takes a lot of mouth to talk well - too afraid to take a stand But you know sometime way on down the road you'll wish you'd never been born and with all that lack of loving it'd be tough not to be destroyed oh no? (chorus) You took a lot of punishment through all your years hey hey hey Mr. Man? and you thought you would be someone but you wondered if you'd get a chance when all your friends had all kinds of success while you drove your busted up truck and they laughed at your for nothing boy they sure did push their luck oh no? Nobody loses their mind in heaven there are no places to hide in heaven there is no room for crimes in heaven nobody loses their life in heaven.

Legend In Her Mind Once upon a time I met a girl who was a legend in her mind. She never followed trends. She knows to be a legend you don't follow nobodies kind. She stuck her nose in the air and walked past all the crazy people who gave her the time of day She never wanted friends she didn't need them telling her to try and be just like them. She grew up strange her folks bought her everything from horses to diamond rings They sent her to reform school taught her not to chew gum or to lose her precious cool. Once upon a time I met a girl who was a legend in her mind She snobbed all the poor kids never talked to anyone her parents said didn't fit in When she got into a punch up people'd go congratulate the person who knocked her out She was a cheerleading, horse riding, ballet princess mistress with a black mark on her world. She grew up strange her folks brought her to judo lessons training her how to fight but she liked to be beat up, messed up, knocked up so she never stood up for her right. Once upon a time I met a girl who was a legend in her mind She never shut up. She said her life story and I had no chance to say mine She never liked me because my daddy is a painter and he likes what he does She used to say to me, "the reason I'm so mean is simply because I grew up strange I'm 23 years old and I'm still living at home. I've got an illegitimate child and mommy and daddy tell me they don't want me in their life."
9.
Your Smile Is Your Wealth In the morning Sun is on your face in the evening gone is your embrace (Chorus) Hey, wear the rain on your brow be beautiful take life sweetly don't be like them express yourself your smile is your wealth I have followed me Found me under your feet I will lift you until the stars retreat (Chorus) I have met you when my life has been unfair I will let you think of me and I'll be there. (Chorus)
10.
You Don't See It If I could get my hands on you sweet heaven would sing me a song I keep sleeping home alone and my luck keeps dragging on well your eyes keep me up all night they're stranded on my mind I want to get to know you one kiss at a time (chorus) but you don't see you don't see it you don't know you don't feel it you don't come - you don't suffer you don't fall like the rain Love has so many faces and I wonder what my place is. Before you get to love me a few hearts have got to break. There's distant tympani thunder everytime my words get confused now there goes my heart again it beats so hard I feel abused your body like a religion is ringing through my mind I keep thinking what won't happen and I complain all the time (chorus) so let's set the world on fire because the passion there ain't wrong you drive me out of bed, girl, I can't sleep at home alone I can't wait forever - I can't break my heart like that So why not call me in off your worn out welcome mat? (chorus)
11.
In Your Life 03:23
In Your Life In your life you'll meet a lot of people some are nice - some Some will guide you through scenes of good and bad some will sit back and watch (chorus) most will cherish you while you're still by their side but I won't forget the one whom I love in the meantime. In your life you'll see some different places your friends will come and go some will follow you without hesitation and some won't see you to their door (chorus) when the time comes to find some new love I'll go and see you on your way you'll pack your cold gun just for some strange fun but I know that we all make mistakes In your life you'll meet a lot of people some are nice - some Some will guide you through scenes of good and bad some will sit back and watch (chorus)
12.
Closing Door Blues (chorus) There is no way I'm coming back here to go through these games no more you'll never see me or be able to reach me I'm not standing in your closing door anymore. Like a captain in stormy weather who ordered his sailors to leave I've been shorebound all alone now with blue above and beneath it's killing me. (chorus)
