There was this guy I knew from back in my hometown
We went to school together as old children
We used to kick stones all along this road here, you see
and we used to talk about girls.
His name was Charlie, don't you know?
He was a bit confused because the folks loved him and the schoolkids hated him.
I was his only friend.
He used to bring me to his uncle's house.
Yeah, we'd go play hide and go seek down in the sewerline
and I'd always find him.
He'd be there whistling "colonel poguey".
Whistling "Colonel Poguey in E Major", he used to say.

Few years later me and Charlie hitched off together
Went to find some action in nearby Denver
Without any money so Charlie tried his luck
Whistling "colonel poguey" on a streetcorner.
Well everyone turned as they passed us on the main drag
they threw a couple of coins in his hat.
Soon we had enough to buy ourselves a bus ticket back home.

Few years later still I went as a pipefitter in Birmingham.
Charlie went as a streetman.
We never crossed paths again.
Because Charlie got shot, you know?
Charlie got shot my some foreign face in Utah
who stole Charlie's earnings for gas money - but not without a fight.

Well, I cried but it was God's will.
I cried but it was God's will.
Yeah, now when I see two kids kicking stones.
I ask them if they know the song "Colonel Poguey"
When they say "No" I teach them the song.
